Atkinson Photograph Collection

browse Atkinson collection

A set of photos taken between about 1880 and 1918 by George F. Atkinson, an eminent mycologist who described many species of American fungi. Atkinson (1854-1918) was was Cornell's first Professor of Mycology; he and his collections were once part of the Department of Botany. His many research articles spanned the entire breadth of mycology, including plant pathogens, stinkhorns and mushrooms. He was among the first mycologists to extensively document his work through photography. Atkinson was also a prodigious describer of new species of fungi; his photographs and accompanying notes document his discoveries.

Photographs in the Atkinson collection may be recognized by the prefix 'CUP-A' which precedes their accession number.
